About Nicholas Calcaterra, DDS
Dr. Nicholas Calcaterra graduated number one in his class from the University at Buffalo (SUNY) School of Dental Medicine, receiving his D.D.S. degree Summa Cum Laude. Dr. Calcaterra then furthered his training by completing the residency program in General Dentistry at Saint Francis Hospital in Hartford, CT. While at Saint Francis, he received the Dr. Gerard Keen Award for his excellence in Oral Surgery. Prior to attending dental school, Dr. Calcaterra received his B.S. in Geological Sciences from Tufts University. As a general dentist, Dr. Nick is highly skilled in all areas of dentistry, treating children and adults. But his true area of expertise is in the field of IV sedation dentistry. He is currently the only general dentist in the entire state of Connecticut in practice who has achieved Master Status in the College of Sedation in Dentistry. This is the highest level a general dentist can achieve in anesthesiology and can only be obtained after passing rigorous board exams. In addition, he has a current license to administer Intravenous Sedation in his office, a license fewer than 10 other Connecticut general dentists posses. His sedation expertise, along with his genuine compassion for patients with dental anxiety, has enabled him to treat thousands of dental phobic patients over the years. In addition to being Connecticut’s most accomplished sedation dentist, Dr. Calcaterra stays up to date on all types of dental procedures, and routinely treats patients from age 1 to over 100. He regularly completes over 100 hours of continuing education per year in order to stay current on new dental techniques and technologies. He is a member of the American Dental Association, Connecticut State Dental Association, American Dental Society of Anesthesiology, and the Academy of General Dentistry. Dr. Calcaterra grew up in Newton, Massachusetts and has always called New England home. He has a strong connection to New Haven County having spent many summers at his grandmother’s home in this area. He is very active in the local community and serves as a Dental Consultant to Bethesda Nursery School in New Haven. When not actively seeing patients, Dr. Calcaterra can be found spending time with his wife Dr. Carla Calcaterra, daughter Alessia Nicole, and son Eric Berne in their home in Orange. Dr. Calcaterra is a strong believer in the use of the internet to communicate to patients. In addition to building this website, he also maintains a blog on general dental topics called Directions in Dentistry. He also developed the award-winning website devoted to his grandfather Dr. Eric Berne, the world famous psychiatrist and author of the bestseller Games People Play.
