About Jose E. Barrera, MD
Dr. Jose Barrera, MD completed his education as a graduate with distinction with a Bachelor’s of Science in Biochemistry from USAFA. He completed medical training at the University of Colorado where he also earned several awards including the American Association for Cancer Research Scholarship for work on head and neck cancer, the Glaser Research Award for Superior Student Research, the Adler Scholarship, the Chancellor’s Diversity Scholarship, the Regent Opportunity Scholarship, the Louise Coulter Fellowship Award for Basic Research in Pulmonary Medicine and the Outstanding Research Presentation by the American Medical Association. “It is truly a privilege to work with my family, colleagues, and patients in achieving these aims. I will use my training and giftedness as a triple board certified specialist in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, and Sleep Medicine/Sleep Surgery to balance functional desires with aesthetic harmony.” He completed a Residency in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Colorado. During residency he earned a research grant to study micrometastases in head and neck cancer and was nominated as the Intern of the year. Dr. Jose Barrera, MD went on to serve in Japan as an Otolaryngologist in Tokyo, Japan. While in the Pacific, he earned the Surgeon of the year award two years in a row as well as the coveted Outstanding Achievement in Clinical Research. He was recognized by George Washington University for his cancer research and received the Arthur S. Flemming Scientific Award. Selected for a double fellowship at Facial Reconstructive Surgery at Stanford University, Dr Jose Barrera, MD completed a fellowship in Sleep Medicine and Sleep Surgery by world-renowned surgeons Drs. Riley and Powell with a focus on maxillofacial surgery, airway, and facial reconstruction. He went on to complete a Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery fellowship at Stanford University with Drs. Goode and Most. Dr. Barrera presented his thesis on Sleep Magnetic Resonance Imaging for Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome and was proclaimed a Fellow of the Triologic Society in 2011 (top 1% of Otolaryngologists). He has been recognized by the American Academy of CHEST Physicians, the American College of Surgeons, and the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery with board certifications in Otolaryngology and Sleep Medicine and a Diplomat of the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery with board certification in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. As a Plastic Surgeon San Antonio he has served the community in San Antonio as a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center, San Antonio.
