About Matthew M. Hanasono, MD

Dr. Matthew Hanasono is a Professor and Reconstructive Microsurgery Fellowship Program Director in the Department of Plastic Surgery at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. He received his undergraduate degree in Biology Summa cum Laude at the University of California, Los Angeles and his medical degree from Stanford University. Dr. Hanasono then completed a residency in Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery at Stanford University and a residency in Plastic Surgery at Cornell University, followed by a fellowship in Reconstructive Microsurgery at MD Anderson Cancer Center. Since 2005, he has been on faculty at MD Anderson Cancer Center where he performs reconstructive surgery for patients with cancer, specializing in microvascular free flap reconstruction. Dr. Hanasono’s research interests include improving outcomes in reconstructive surgery for patients with cancers of the head and neck, breast, and extremities. He has given over 200 lectures nationally and internationally on a broad range of topics related to plastic and reconstructive surgery and has published more than 100 scientific journal articles and 50 medical textbook chapters. He was the lead editor and author of the textbook Reconstructive Plastic Surgery of the Head and Neck and is currently editing two new textbooks on reconstructive surgery. He is on the editorial board for five journals in plastic surgery. In 2014, Dr. Hanasono had the honor being the American Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery Godina Traveling Fellow in recognition of his accomplishments in the field of reconstructive microsurgery.
