About Michael A. Zelaya, DMD
Dr. Zelaya's involvement with dentistry began as a dental assistant in the U.S Army. After serving several years with some of the most gifted and talented dentists in the dental profession, he decided to leave the military and pursue a dental education. He began his undergraduate studies at Farleigh Dickinson University as single parent of two young boys. While juggling parenthood, undergraduate studies and a graveyard shift at UPS he was able to graduate in the top percentile of his class. He received his dental degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ (UMDNJ). Since the military had given Dr. Zelaya a sense of direction and accomplishment, therefore upon graduation from the UMDNJ, he re-joined the organization, which had given his family hope. While in the military he completed a ""One Year General Practice Residency"" during which he was chief resident. Upon completion of the residency program, he was assigned to Germany, unfortunately at the very same time, Suddam Hussein decided to invade Kuwait. While in route to Germany, Dr. Zelaya was re-assigned to the Middle East where he served for nine months providing dental and medical support to all of the allied forces in the Gulf. Upon completion of his Middle East duties, Dr. Zelaya returned to Germany and was assigned to a major European command where he took on the duties of Dental Infection Control Officer, Childrens Dental Disease Prevention Officer and the Primary O.R Surgical Assistant for the Oral Surgeon. While maintaining a busy practice, Dr. Zelaya successfully co-ordinated and implemented infection control policies established by Occupational Safety and Health Association (OSHA), the American Dental Association (ADA) and Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Dr. Zelaya received the Army Commendation Medal for a successful inspection by OSHA of five dental clinics within the command. Being in a major medical facility afforded Dr. Zelaya the ability to work closely with every medical/dental specialist developing comprehensive dental care plans from total oral rehabilitation to cosmetic dental improvements. After his commitment to the military, Dr. Zelaya decided to return to the civilian sector, primarily to spend more time with his family. He settled back where he grew up providing comprehensive treatment to his patients. Dr. Zelaya is involved with local schools helping 7 and 8 year olds understand the importance of dental care. He also publishes articles in local papers, which are always informative, covering subjects from Fluoride to Gum Disease. Dr. Zelaya has persued extensive post-doctoral training in Cosmetic Dentistry, specifically at ""The Rosenthal Institute for Aesthetic Dentistry"", where he graduated from the Advanced Art of Aesthetic Dentistry course. Dr. Zelaya has been awarded the prestige award of ""Americas Top Dentist"" in Cosmetic and Esthetic Reconstruction for 2008,2009 and 2012.
